What happens if the barcode on your self print boarding pass doesn't scan at
the security check? I'm guessing you have to go to the Ryanair check in
desk?

Can you still do this if there is less than 40 minutes before departure? Or
do you just not fly?

I've had this happen to me on attempting to pass into security numerous
times with BMIbaby barcodes, but never with an EasyJet one. (I don't fly
Ryanair).

Luckily I've always been able to get a replacement in time, the incident
usually being 60 minutes before departure. I suppose it depends who and
where any 40 minute (or other) deadline is being enforced.

In my experience if the barcode fails, they look up the reference
code. They can't really send you packing if their gear rejects it
(unless the print is visibly fuzzed), not that some FY staff wouldn't
try it on.

For normal airlines a gate reject often means a new pass due to
upgrade, though also seat reassignment in the wrong direction so you
can glare angrily at the seat occupant who hijacked the old placing.

I'm talking about when they scan the barcode to let you into the
security screening area. If the barcode fails, they send you away.

True, they all do that. Happened to me only once in the early days of
KL mobile phone barcodes, when the procedure was to jump into the
front of the biz queue to get a paper pass. Wouldn't probably avoid an
FY £60 scalp for "airport printing" (but didn't someone win that back
in a court case? Yet it goes on?)

I think from now on if there is a queue, I will go to the desk and get a
replacement boarding pass before I join the queue. Because quite often when
I fly during busy periods there is a long line before your pass is scanned,
and you have often waited for up to half an hour before you know whether
it's good or not, then you have to go back to the desk, get pass changed and
join the back of the queue again.
